Save Kelly’s Place - Stop Council Closing Community Childcare
North Sydney Council is forcing the closure of essential not-for-profit community childcare supporting over 50 local families, for a small increase in green space, instead of planning for a solution that protects both.
North Sydney Council is moving to shut down Kelly’s Place, a not‑for‑profit, community‑run childcare centre that has supported local families for nearly 40 years.
More than 50 local families rely on Kelly’s Place for high-quality early education that exceeds National Quality Standards. It's closure would directly impact children, families and dedicated educators, while reducing access to affordable, community-based childcare in an area already under pressure.
Crows Nest and St Leonards are growing rapidly, with thousands of new homes planned and existing infrastructure and services already strained. Shutting an established community childcare centre makes no sense.
Council plans to demolish Kelly’s Place to create a park. This is a false choice.
Our community should not be forced to choose between green space and essential childcare. North Sydney Council can and must deliver both.
Kelly’s Place deserves protection and a secure future. Council must show leadership by securing relocation before any demolition proceeds, rather than allowing this vital community asset to be lost forever.
We call on North Sydney Council to:
Extend Kelly’s Place’s lease to December 2027
Secure and support a suitable long‑term relocation before demolition
Support sustainable solutions for community‑based childcare
