Is Kelly’s Place opposed to more open space?
No. Kelly’s Place supports more open space for Crows Nest. Our position is simple: the community should not have to choose between open space and not for profit, community-based childcare. We believe there is a practical way to protect both.
Why does Kelly’s Place need to stay open?
Kelly’s Place is the only community-based not-for-profit childcare service in the Crows Nest area. It is well-established, trusted and exceeding quality rated centre that has been proudly serving the local community for 38 years. It cannot be readily replaced. The population growth in Crows Nest deserve to have this kind of community infrastructure.
What is the plan for Stage 2 Hume Street?
There is no final concept design for the park. The park can be designed to include Kelly’s Place. The State Government is open to such a design. We can have both park and community childcare.
Has there been collaboration between Kelly’s Place and North Sydney Council?
In the past, Council has worked collaboratively with Kelly’s Place for many years on relocation. This relationship has changed.
Any current potential sites for relocation require re-development, meaning significant time and money. Council have refused to use available dedicated Childcare developer contributions ($2.5 million) to relocate Kelly’s Place. Council also say there is no time and we must close in December 2026.
What is Councils proposal?
Council’s park proposal shuts down Kelly’s Place without any replacement. It is not proper strategic planning. There will be a loss of forty childcare spaces per day, twenty educator jobs and the heart of a community.
